Giving to the Center

Historically, support for Center Fellowships has come from a combination of public agencies and private foundations.  The Ford Foundation was our principle benefactor in the early years, and the National Science Foundation provided significant support from the 1970's to the 90's.  In recent years we have benefited from the generosity of many organizations, foundations and individuals.

These foundations have provided support for an array of needs—from gifts to endowment and unrestricted funds for our operating budget, to gifts to fund specific projects or the work of scholars in specific fields. Nevertheless, the number of agencies and foundations willing to support the kind of innovative, open-ended scholarship the Center advocates has always been small. In fact, traditional sources of support for our work are shrinking as foundations focus on projects with clear deliverables and tightly defined timetables. Although this approach is valid, it is generally at odds with our fundamental commitment to giving the world’s best scholars the freedom to pursue projects that, in their view, will best advance knowledge in their chosen fields.

Given this funding environment, we are working to diversify our sources of support. First, we are expanding the number and kind of foundations we approach for help—for both unrestricted and targeted funding. Second, we are building a new program of alumni giving—both outright annual gifts and planned gifts as part of estate plans. Third, we are identifying and building relationships with a small number of philanthropists—patrons of scholarship—who value our mission and support our work.

We are seeking funding for our residential fellowship program, both for established senior Fellows and for rising intellectual stars. In addition, we need support for our special projects and summer institutes, which are designed to grapple with contemporary social problems. Individual patrons may contribute to any of our programs—on an annual basis or as endowed funds. You may choose to support scholars or programs in broad areas of inquiry—such as education, economics, or the humanities—or may leave your gifts unrestricted. Please contact us to discuss your interests and options for you to support the Center and our mission of advancing knowledge in human behavior.
